When you visit Great Falls, you are only minutes away from the country’s best outdoor experiences.  Whether biking, skating, jogging or walking is your favorite outdoor activity, River’s Edge Trail is the perfect setting. Extending over 40 miles along both sides of the Missouri River, this trail provides spectacular views of the river canyon and all the hydro-electric dams, reservoirs and waterfalls. The trail links many local parks and attractions along our scenic and historic riverfront and offers the chance to watch a wide variety of waterfowl feeding along the river.

Great Falls’ location along the Missouri and Sun Rivers makes boating, fishing, and water skiing enjoyable within the city limits along with numerous natural attractions.  Some of the finest, readily-accessible hunting and fishing in the country lies in the wilderness areas near Great Falls.

Plenty of downhill and cross-country skiing opportunities are available in the winter months around Great Falls.  Kings Hill Recreation Area is a winter lover paradise — uncrowded slopes, fresh powder, Olympic-class cross country skiing, snowmobile trails and unbelievable downhill skiing and snowboarding at Showdown Ski Area, is only an hour away.

As for the summer months, you can always head out to the ball game and catch the Great Falls Voyagers in action.  An affiliate team of the Chicago White Sox, the Voyagers represent Great Falls in the Pioneer League baseball conference.  If golf is a little more your style, a number of premier golf courses are also available to visitors throughout the city. 

   

State Parks and National Forest
Visit a fish hatchery or a buffalo jump; float the Smith River; or picnic in the forest—a stop in Great Falls offers all of these.  Visit the State Parks and the Lewis and Clark National Forest to see what we have to offer.  You will not be disappointed!

Great Falls Cycling Routes

1. Mountain Bike the Little Belts  Hundreds of miles of Forest Service trail systems and fire roads spider web out from Showdown, creating an amazing array of mountain biking opportunities for all abilities of riders. These trails and rides will take you through some of the finest wild country that Montana has to offer.

2. Gates of the Mountains Riverboat Tours  Towering rock formations that lined the sides of the mighty Missouri River were dubbed the Gates of the Mountains by those on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  These breathtaking formations are home to numerous wildlife species such as bear, big horn sheep and mountain goats.  Riverboat tours are available June thru September.  For more information contact Gates of the Mountains Boat Tours:  406-458-5241.

3. Walk the River’s Edge Trail  Extending over 30 miles along the beautiful Missouri River, this trail offers spectacular views of Black Eagle Falls, Rainbow Falls, Crooked Falls and the Great Falls of the Missouri.
